The Buzz on Honeybee Challenges
Hey there, Bee Enthusiasts! πΈβ¨ Ever wondered about the challenges our buzzing buddies are facing? Marla Spivak spills the honey
on the honeybee’s plight in her enlightening TED talk:
“Honeybees have thrived for 50 million years, each colony 40 to 50,000 individuals coordinated in surprising harmony. So why, seven years ago, did colonies start dying en masse? Marla Spivak reveals four factors interacting with tragic consequences. This is not simply a problem because bees pollinate a third of the world’s crops. Could this incredible species be holding up a mirror for us?”
Beekeeping became more than a hobby; it became my hands-on confirmation of what I’ve seen in the mirror for decades.
Back in the day, placing a hive in town seemed like a subpar choice compared to the farm. Fast forward forty years, and it’s a whole new ball game. My top-performing hives are the ones I keep near or in town. They might not churn out as much honey in the short term, but they are:
- Healthier.
- Better at overwintering.
- Require less feed.
- And consistently produce honey.
