Hey Bee Friends!✨

Let’s talk about the Multipurpose Hive - a genius concept designed with Wyoming’s climate in mind. Before you embark on building this hive, double-check the length of your Langstroth frames. This hive works like magic with 19″ long frames, so if yours are larger, a bit of modification might be in order. Now, onto the exciting details!

What’s the Buzz All About?

Criteria

This hive is a game-changer if you need a taller hive or want to switch things up with frames. It’s got a lot going for it:

  • Bottom-supported 19″ long Langstroth frames capability.
  • Functions as a two-box long hive.
  • Can be stacked.
  • Hand truck friendly.
  • 1 1/4″ top bar width.
  • 3/4″ entrance/bottom space.
  • Designed with the bee’s wintering needs in mind.

Construction

Keeping it simple and economic:

  • 8″ wide lumber is your best friend.
  • Glue two 6′ boards for the sides.
  • Glue two 6′ boards for the ends and follower board.
  • Add four 6′ boards for the bottom and cover.
  • Finish the cover with two 1″x4″x6′ boards and some insulation.
  • Frame support slats, top bars, spacer cleats – all sorted!

What Sets It Apart?

Bottom Support

With bottom support, this hive stands strong and is less prone to rot. Plus, it’s a fortress against hive beetles.

End Entrances

No more side entrances – we’ve got end entrances now! They’re easier to cut and don’t mess with the support slats.

Flexible Sidewall Height

The sidewall height is as flexible as your yoga instructor. Want it taller? Go for it! Need it deeper? You got it!

Bee Space

Maintaining bee space is a challenge, but here’s the sweet spot – work the hive at least twice a year if you’re using frames. Bees love a little elbow room!

Modifications

Now, here’s where it gets fun – you can add:

  • A hinged end piece.
  • A window for a sneak peek.
  • Gabled ends for that extra flair.
  • A sloped, vented cover like a Warre’ hive.
  • A landing board for those stylish entrances.
  • Legs, cleats, or turn it into a bottom-supported frame hive

Get your hive, get your tools, and let the buzzing begin! 🛠️🌼
