Year 2 January - Sorting Out Boxes and Frames 🖊️

I’ve got a whole collection of equipment—top bar hives, Lang hives, combo hives, nucs, observation hives, and more.

Initially, I thought giving them away and making the move to Florida would mean a fresh start for my beekeeping journey. I even planned to standardize my equipment, likely opting for top bar hives. However, here I am, back in Wyoming, and I’ve got it all back again.

It’s a bit of a mess. The Lang equipment is falling apart. The frames, at 1 3/8″, are wider than I’d prefer. Plus, the small cell comb in them is a decade old. So, here’s a rare opportunity for a beekeeper—a once-in-a-lifetime chance! What to do? You can read about it here.

Just imagine—having just one kind of equipment. Now, that’s simplicity!

What’s the conclusion of the matter? Well, it’s probably not what you’d expect and certainly not for the reasons you might think! I need hives that I can move by myself. And I happen to have brand new frame-based equipment lying around.

So, I’m back in the box and frame business. Lang hives are hard to beat. Here’s why:

  • They’re flexible.
  • They’re expandable.
  • They’re compatible.
  • They can be expensive, especially with freight.
  • But hey, they’re free if you’ve already bought them.
