October’s Snow: A Cozy Farewell to the Season
A few days back, I tiptoed into the beeyard to prepare the hives for winter. The air was crisp, the day was winding down, and the bees, snug in their abode, were taking a break from their usual buzzing activity. Still, a curious bunch ventured out as I adjusted the hive entrances.
In a matter of minutes, the entrance reducers snugly settled into their winter positions. The bees, reassured that all was well, retreated to the warmth, tranquility, and safety of their hive.
As I witnessed the bees vanish back into their cozy homes, an unexpected wave of satisfaction washed over me. They were in splendid shape, and no further interventions were needed.
Now, time and season will unfold in their natural rhythm. Winter stretches ahead, a reality seasoned beekeepers like me are well acquainted with. The bees, blissfully unaware, rely on eons of instinct to guide them through. Both the bees and I share a sense of optimism.
Not even today’s blizzard, with its 24 inches of snow and biting cold, can dampen my spirits. Like the bees, I’ll huddle down in my hive, take a breather from bee-ing, and dream of the promise the future holds.
All’s well. Life is good. And the coming year holds the promise of being better than ever. โจ
